It is always difficult to fully show the misery and horrific conditions that people living in extreme poverty suffer each day. During the past 7 years of traveling to Nicaragua as Rotary volunteers, we have tried to capture their story and share it with people asking how they can help. Through photos, videos and often times just sharing our experiences, many great projects have evolved and changes are taking place to help these gentle people towards a better existence.
These photos are organized into groups, all of which were taken in Nicaragua. Please do not copy or reproduce these photos, for they belong to the contributing photographers. If you wish to use any of these photos, please email the webmaster with your request and specific use.

Descriptions
In the city of Chinandega lies the town garbage dump where hundreds of families, including many children, still scavenge for scraps of food and items to sell for recycling. There homes are very near this dump, so they can stay close to the one source of revenue to support themselves. Disease and suffering run rampant. Despair and hopelessness show through in their 'dark' eyes. Children do not belong here!
This home was opened to help blind children, who too often are cast off by their families, who themselves are unable to cope with this affliction. Santa Lucia not only cares for this children, but attempts to train them with a skill to help make their lives whole.
This is a technical vocational training center located in Betania, Chinandega. This center was created with the objective of educating and training young people from Chinandega's slums, who exhibit leadership talent. Afterwards, they have the ability to realize a new life with skills to help them move into society as a productive young person. The technical center has the capacity to train 200 young people per year.
Santa Matilde
The Santa Matilde community was formed to help the families who lived in a settlement called El Limonal located a few meters from the Chinandega city dump and septic tanks. Donor organizations such as Rotary Club of Humble (Texas), Amigos for Christ, Food for the Poor and others, help fund the building of 300 houses for these families, forming the community of Santa Matilde. The Santa Matilde school has a population of over 400 students from preschool to 6th grade, offering a free education, health care, medicines, food and school supplies.
Rotary Village
This is the newest village created to move families living in extreme poverty (in San Pablo) into a more main stream communal existence. San Pablo was an agricultural area which had not recovered from Huricane Mitch (1998). These poor families lived in palm thatched, plastic covered shacks, gleaning from the fields near their shacks and from fruit and roots on fence rows.
